Ernie Els took a small step toward his World #1 goal by winning the Honda Classic. He will need several more steps to get there, but it was good to see him giving the winner’s interview after the tournament. As the Masters Tournament approaches, Els needs to continue his level of play and remain mentally fresh, which can sometimes be a difficult thing to accomplish.
Yes, the Masters is quickly approaching. Els is playing well, Mickelson is playing well, and Tiger, well, Tiger is beating the world. He’s been the favorite to win the Masters since 1998 (the year after his first win there). It seems silly to state, but he’ll be the favorite again despite how well anyone else is playing. He’s expensive, but how can a fantasy golf team be complete without Tiger Woods, if he’s playing that week. When it comes to the Masters, he’s nearly a must-have fantasy golf pick.
There are some truly unknown names amongst the fantasy golf stats leaders (Merrick, Marino), but the top players are rising to the top of the stats. John Merrick and Steve Marino lead the group of guys that will be good buys for fantasy golf teams. When the Masters rolls around, the expensive of having Tiger on the team can probably be offset by players like Marino, Merrick and a few others. Here are the PGA Tour stats leaders:
