PGA TOUR's Inaugural Playoff Series Gets Underway This Week

Players will tee-up at the Barclays this week to begin the four-tournament Fedex Cup playoff series. Most PGA stars are in, but it will be exciting if an underdog wins.

Yes. Tiger is in (but not playing the first event), Phil's in, Vijay's in, virtually every "big-name" in the game is in the Fedex Cup Playoffs. There are also tons of other players in the top-144 golfers that made the playoffs who are not so well known. A Fedex Cup Championship, with its $10 million paycheck, would take a lot of pressure off one of the guys who is just making a living out there on tour. Actually, it's only the promise of $10 million down the road a few years, as it's more of a "pension" than a paycheck.

The Top-20 in the Fedex Standings, along with their beginning point totals, are:

  1. Tiger Woods (100,000)
  2. Vijay Singh (99,000)
  3. Jim Furyk (98,500)
  4. Phil Mickelson (98,000)
  5. K.J. Choi (97,500)
  6. Rory Sabbatini (97,250)
  7. Zach Johnson (97,000)
  8. Charles Howell, III (96,750)
  9. Brandt Snedeker (96,500)
  10. Adam Scott (96,250)
  11. Scott Verplank (96,100)
  12. Steve Stricker (95,950)
  13. Sergio Garcia (95,800)
  14. Woody Austin (95,650)
  15. Hunter Mahan (95,500)
  16. John Rollins (95,350)
  17. Boo Weekley (95,200)
  18. Aaron Baddeley (95,050)
  19. Ernie Els (94,900)
  20. Mark Calcavecchia (94,750)

At the bottom of the 144-man Fedex playoff field, those just making the grade are:

124 John Merrick (86,200); 125 Bill Haas (86,125); 126 Jason Bohn (86,050); 127 Johnson Wagner (85,975); 128 Jason Dufner (85,900); 129 Frank Lickliter, II (85,825); 130 Gavin Coles (85,750); 131 Ryan Armour (85,675); 132 Bob Heintz (85,600); 133 Ryan Palmer (85,525);134 Rich Beem (85,450); 135 Tripp Isenhour (85,375); 136 Billy Andrade (85,300); 137 Anders Hansen (85,225); 138 Jesper Parnevik (85,150); 139 Corey Pavin (85,075); 140 Shigeki Maruyama (85,000); 141 Michael Putnam (84,925); 142 Bob Tway (84,850); 143 Andrew Buckle (84,775); and 144 Jeff Gove (84,700).

As shown by the score beginning points balances, only 15,300 points separates Tiger Woods from Jeff Gove. With each playoff event's possible points, that separation isn't much. Winners of the first three Fedex playoff events will receive 9,000 points. At the Tour Championship, the winner receives 10,300 points.

The Cup could be a life-changing event to most of the top-144 players, but there is the potential for the championship to be anticlimactic; someone begins to run away with the lead. Also, it could take away some glory and thunder from the winner of the Tour Championship event, traditionally one of the near-majors. In just over a month, all will be known.
