As the season marches on the PGA TOUR's Fedex Cup Playoffs are approaching. Here's a brief playoff description and the Top-20 in the standings heading to British Open wee

The Fedex Cup Playoffs begin on August 23 at The Barclays Classic. The top-144 players in the Fedex standings will be eligible to begin the four-event tour playoff run. They had better bring their A-game, because only 120 will be eligible to continue toward the championship after the first week. The field is progressively narrowed to only 30 eligible Cup participants at The Tour Championship, though the tournament field will be filled as usual.
At the beginning of the Fedex Cup playoffs, the accumulated points are reset. The top player begins with 100,000 points, the second place player begins with 99,000, third place receives 98,500, and so on down to number 144, who starts with 84,700. The reset should provide an exciting finish.
At present, the top-20 players in the Fedex Standings are as follows:
In positions 140 through 144, are the following players: Jason Dufner, 1,344; Greg Owen, 1,321; Marco Dawson, 1,305; Glen Day, 1,297; and Duffy Waldorf, 1,252.
At present, the following hover just out of the top-144 playoff-eligible players (145-149): Cameron Beckman, 1,208; Parker McLachlin, 1,207; Robert Gamez, 1,190; Richard S. Johnson, 1,163; Steve Flesch, 1,150.
The Fedex Cup didn't arrive with much support or fanfare. However, as the season progressed, the playoff system began to garner more attention and more support from tour players. A creative and successful marketing plan, which involved, and presumably payed, a number of players for their appearances in Cup commercials, surely played a large part in the positive momentum.
The playoff system should garner some attention for several players that would normally be outside the spotlight. In years past, guys that may have hung around, playing solidly but without wins or top-10's, simply didn't get noticed. Being out of the public view hurt them with what could have been a large part of their income, sponsorships. Now, well over 100 players that are typically "out of sight, out of mind", will have their own marketing tool as Fedex Cup playoff contenders. Spread the wealth around corporate world, spread the wealth around.
