Steve Stricker is having one of the best career resurgences in recent history. After playing well for most of the season, he got a win at The Barclays, arguably when it mattered most; at the beginning of the Fedex Cup playoffs. The win moved him up 11 spots, to the top of the Fedex Rankings. He will have to finish near the top in each of the remaining three Fedex tournaments if he hopes to take home the trophy, as will everyone else. For the players outside the top-20 or so, they will have to win at least two tournaments and finish highly in the other if they hope to win the Cup.
Rich Beem was the biggest mover this week, jumping 21 spots to 113th, but he still has a long way to go. Ian Poulter moved up 18 spots to 59th, which is within striking distance of the top-20 with a good showing at the Deutsche Bank.
Here are the top-20 players in the rankings after week one of the playoffs:
Tiger Woods, after missing The Barclays, has a huge mountain to climb with only three Fedex Tournaments left. At the Deutsche Bank Championship, Woods will get try to begin his ascent. Twenty four players, however, will not. Among the players eliminated after week one of the Fedex Cup Playoffs were the following notables: Ryan Palmer, Trip Isenhour, Billy Andrade, Anders Hansen, Corey Pavin, Jesper Parnevik, Shigeki Maruyama, and Joe Durant.
After the Deutsche Bank Championship, the top-70 players will move on toward the Fedex Championship. At present, John Mallinger, Bo Van Pelt, Steven Leaney, Will Mackenzie and Fred Funk sit just outside that cut-off and need a good showing to move on to the next round, and a great finish to remain viable for the Fedex Championship.
After the Deutsche Bank, the top-70 players will then move on to the BMW Championship, and the top-30 to the Tour Championship. At completion of the Tour Championship, the first Fedex Cup Champion will be handed the trophy.
