Tiger Woods took his 60th PGA Tour victory this weekend in winning the BMW Championship, the third leg of the Fedex Cup Playoff series. He quickly moved from third place to first after capping off four consecutive sub-70 rounds with a Sunday 63. Steve Stricker, Adam Scott, Tim Clark and Justin Rose, the remainder of the top-5, all of whom also posted four rounds in the 60s, would likely have bet such scores would have faired better. Tiger’s 63 gave him a two-shot victory over Baddeley and four shots over Stricker.
At age 40, Steve Stricker is enjoying the best year of his career. He’s had one win, four seconds, nine top-10s and over $4.5 million in earnings. He’s also positioned himself for a real shot at the Fedex Cup Championship, trailing Tiger Woods by 3,133 points going into the Tour Championship.
The Woods-Mickelson Fedex battle is still on. With Mickelson now in third place and Tiger in first, they have simply reversed the roles from a week ago when Lefty decided to skip the BMW. Although all of the top-30 in the Fedex points have a mathematical chance, only the top hand-full, possibly the top-15 have a realistic shot.
Here are the 30 remaining players, in order of present Fedex Ranking, vying for the Fedex Cup this week at the Tour Championship:
The Fedex Cup, after going most of the year without much grumbling, has come under fire and endured criticism since the Playoffs began. The $10 million winner's "annuity", player's supposed inability to understand the format, top players skipping tournaments, too many back-to-back tournaments, and other problems have plagued the newest addition to the PGA Tour schedule. Despite the controversy, largely limited to players and members of the media, interest in the Fedex Cup has remained high among fans.
The Tour Championship will be played over Atlanta, Georgia's East Lake Golf Club.
