Jim Furyk pulled off a difficult title defense today at the Canadian Open. In a week where 15 of the top-20 golfers took the week off, there were few big changes.

The historic Canadian Open saw a rare feat this week, with Jim Furyk's succesful title defense. He was the first to do it at the Canadian since 1951, when Jim Ferrier defended. Even though many of the top golfers didn't play this week, there was plenty of tough competition.

The low rounds of the day went to Furyk and Alex Cjeka, both of whom posted blistering 64's. Young Ryan Palmer and George McNeil both fired 66's, which gave them both a T3 finish. In the runner-up position was ironman Vijay Singh. Singh, who had his chance for a possible tie and playoff when Furyk bogeyed 18, couldn't close the gap and finished one shot back with a round of 68; his third 68 of the week.

Other notables: Hunter Mahan, who came in T5 at -12; Camilo Villegas, who started the day in 27th position, finished T10 after a Sunday 66; Canada's favorite son this week, Mike Weir, came in -5 for the tournament, good enough for a T34; Sean O'Hair and Mark Calcavecchia both completed the tournament at -1, putting them at T50.

The biggest jump in the Top-20 in the Fedex Cup ranking was Hunter Mahan, who moved from 16th to 12th. Here's this week's Top-20 standings in the race for the Fedex Cup:

  1. Tiger Woods, 20,899
  2. Vijay Singh, 19,070
  3. Jim Furyk, 16,691

  10. Steve Stricker, 10,300
  11. Sergio Garcia, 10,219
  12. Hunter Mahan, 9,596

  18. Luke Donald, 8,300
  19. Padraig Harrington, 8,261
  20. David Toms, 8,106

Geoff Ogilvy (7,639) sits in 21st position, with Robert Allenby (7,489), Woody Austin (7,454), and Jonathan Byrd (7,329) just behind.

With only a few weeks left until the "cut" before the Fedex playoffs, it's getting tight for the players hovering around position 144, the cut-off point. Bunched closely in positions 141 through 145 are Bob Tway, Joe Durant, John Merrick, Eric Axley and Steve Lowery, with less than 100 points separating them.

Coming this week on tour are the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational and, the full-field event, the Reno-Tahoe Open. Tiger Woods is defending champion at the WGC event, while Will MacKenzie will attempt to defendant his title in Reno.
