Congratulations to Padraig Harrington, the "champion golfer of the year." After an exciting finish, the top-20 positions in the Fedex Standings see a bit of a shake-up.
It's always to see humility and appreciation in a champion upon completion of a career defining victory. Padraig Harrington certainly didn't disappoint by that measure, nor by his play. He may disagree, due to his misfortune on the 72nd hole. He gutted it out and in a true display of character, maintained composure for the win. Sergio Garcia took a huge step, again, he may not feel that way, toward becoming a major champion. With his 2nd-place finish, he confirmed that he has the game, some added maturity, and the fortitude to hang tight under tremendous pressure. Americans Hunter Mahan and Ben Curtis, finishing T6 and T8, respectively, played spectacularly on Sunday as well. Both came home with final round 65s. Low round of the day went to Australian Richard Green, who fired a Sunday 64 to tie him with Steve Stricker for a Carnoustie, Open Championship record. Here are the top-20 in the Fedex Cup standings after today's completion of the Open:
Geoff Ogilvy and Robert Allenby dropped just out of the Fedex Cup top-20, sitting in 21st and 22nd place. In other tour news, Joe Ogilvie won the PGA TOUR's U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which was also held this week. Ogilvie ranks 120th in the Fedex race. Charlie Wi (Fedex 122), Tim Herron (Fedex 117) and Tim Clark (Fedex 58) all finished T2. The march toward crowning the first Fedex Cup Champion continues at the Canadian Open next week in Ontario. Jim Furyk will try to defend his title with more solid play. Last year, Bart Bryant came one shot shy of Furyk, and Sean O'Hair just one shot behind Bryant. Although many of the top players will be absent from the Canadian championship, headliners Mike Weir, Vijay Singh, John Daly, Chris DiMarco, Justin Leonard, Camilo Villegas and many others will make the trip north. Other past winners in the field include Mark Calcavecchia, Singh, and John Rollins. Some historical winners of the Canadian include Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead.
