Most notable among the top-10 was Phil Mickelson’s move from 10th to 2nd in the Ryder Cup standings, after his two-shot win at Riviera. Mickelson is beginning to have more flashes of his greatness, evidenced by his second round 64, to go along with rounds of 68, 70 and 70. Jeff Quinney made a huge leap up the charts, 71st to 14th, with his second place finish. Aside from Joe Durant’s appearance just inside the top-10, everyone else was simply bumped down a notch by Mickelson, except Tiger Woods.
FBR Open champion, J.B. Holmes continued his solid play. Aside from an opening round 74 at Riviera, Holmes played great golf that included a second round 66. He earned himself a T7 finish with K.J. Choi and Stuart Appleby. Holmes needed another good week, as he is pitted against Tiger Woods in the opening round match at the Accenture Match Play Championship. He’ll be described as a huge underdog, when in actuality he is simply the furthest thing from a pushover. Keep an eye on him this week, and the rest of the year.
For the Europeans, Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald came back strong in their first PGA Tour appearances of the year at the Northern Trust Open. Both players finished T3. Paul Casey was the next closest European Ryder Cup hopeful last week, finishing T22, followed by Alex Cejka (T36), Sergio Garcia (T46), Fredrik Jacobsen (T55) and Carl Pettersson (T74).
Here are this week's Top-25 in the Ryder Cup Standings:
This week is a "split week" on the PGA Tour. The top golfers in the Official World Golf Ranking are at the Accenture Match Play Championship at The Gallery at Dove Mountain near Tucson. The wider Tour is at El Cameleon in Riviera Maya, Mexico for the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Fred Funk is the defending champion at the Mayakoba.
