Singh Leads 2007 Canadian OpenMahan back in the Hunt, Furyk LurkingJul 28, 2007 Robert Morris McCall
SIngh leads in Canada with a finely carved 68, followed by Australian Steve Allen, Mallinger, and Hunter Mahan.
Vijay is looking solid at the top of the leader board (12 under) after the third round of the Canadian Open at Angus Glen today. He shot 6 birdies and 3 bogeys on his way to a 3 under 68 following earlier rounds of 68 and 65. Close in his footsteps are unheralded Aussie Steve Allen and John Mallinger sitting on 11 under, followed by Hunter Mahan at 10 under and mister consistency himself, the worlds number 3 Jim Furyk lying in equal fifth with Pat Perez at 9 under. After setting the tournament alight with a blazing 62 Thursday, and a disappointing 74 Friday, Hunter Mahan found his touch again firing a 67 which included an eagle at 11, his 4th of the tournament. Look out for him Sunday. He will be eager to tuck another one under his belt after his fine win in the Travelers last month and is playing some brilliant golf at th moment. Last years winner Jim Furyk predictably climbed the leaderboard on moving day. He's only had 5 bogeys in 3 rounds, and looks ominously positioned behind the leaders. His mental game is the toughest on tour, and he will be right in amongst it as they make the turn Sunday. Steve Allen won the Australian Open in 2002, but hasn't had a win since and will be searching for something special coming down the stretch. He's a journeyman pro and a win here would be a huge boost to his career. Unfortunately he bogeyed the last today suggesting that final day nerves may get the better of him. Another Aussie, Sydneysider Paul Gow is having a good tournamnent, and is within striking distance. American John Mallinger a relative newcomer to the PGA Tour may find the going tough tommorrow, as he looks for his first win on tour. Pat Perez also will be looking to add to the trophy cabinet but both these players will find the going tough as the pressure mounts going down the stretch. Singh is in charge and a proven winner on tour but he hasn't shown a killer instinct recently which I find disconcerting . Logic tells you Furyk should win from here, but my money is on Mahan. He showed good maturity today shrugging off the 74, and has the form and brashness to carry out a win here. Lets see if he can repeat the fine 65 he shot in the final round of the British Open last week.
