The next instalment of The PGA European Tour heads to the par 71 Royal Park golf course, Roveri, Torino for The Italian Open beginning 7th May 2009.
The tournament is one of the oldest on The European Tour but this is one of the first times it has been staged in Torino. Thomas Levet has described this as one of the toughest courses on tour partly represented by its own version of Augusta’s Amen Corner. South Africa’s Hennie Otto is the defending champion and Francesco Molinari and his brother Edoardo cradle the home fans best hopes of an Italian win. John Daly's SwingMolinari tees off with Alvaro Quiros and John Daly in the afternoon’s main attraction and the players produce three good rounds. Quiros shoots 71, Daly 69 and Molinari 68 in good weather. Daly looked consistently good, taking until the seventeenth to drop his first shot and it’s always interesting to see which set of trousers are going to blast their way around the course. Stats show that John Daly’s swing is half the speed of Quiros’s. The round of the day comes from Ireland’s Gareth Maybin who breaks the course record with a 64. Roope Kakko from Finland matches Maybin’s round of yesterday but is still two shots behind Argentina’s Daniel Vancsik who shoots a 65 which is equalled by Robert Rock on a day when half the field card under 70. Daly is two under again and Molinari matches that score to get to five under par. Although the last three holes feature three par four holes of over 450 yards, the conditions mean the course is not showing its teeth. Halfway through round three and it is a log jam at the top of the leader board with 18 players on seven, eight or nine under par so the weekend will be exciting. South Africa’s Thomas Aiken has made a move up the leader board today to get to nine under and is joined by Gareth Maybin. The PGA European TourAustralia’s Peter O’malley produces the fourth 64 of the week to equal the course record. Robert Rock is looking very smooth and could be a threat to win his first tournament on The PGA European Tour. John Daly is pleasing his army of fans and finding his feet over in Europe. He seems calm and happy and must be pleased with his golf. He finishes Round three on six under par. Thomas Bjorn has risen to the top ten with consecutively better rounds through the week. There are no 64’s today but the crowds do see four scores of 65. Australia’s Wade Ormsby moves from 65th to 25th with one of them, Dutchman Robert Van-Derksen gets another, Francesco Molinari finishes his with an air of disappointment stemming from yesterday’s poor round, but in truth he has had a good day, and with his joint 6th place finish, equal with Thomas Bjorn, a good week. Daniel Vancsik Runaway WinnerNone can hold a candle to the fourth compiler of 65, Daniel Vancsik runaway winner and standout performer, is seven shots from his nearest challenger after fourteen holes and finishing six shots ahead on 17 under par. John Daly holes four birdies on the back nine to secure a joint runner up spot with Frances’s Raphael Jacquelin and Englishman Robert Rock all reaching 11 under par. Thomas Aiken finished fifth.
