Tom Watson finishes tied first with fellow American Steve Marino. The Aisla Course, Turnberry proves a formidable test for the worlds best on Day Two of The Open 2009.

The second day begins at Turnberry in trickier conditions. Grey skies are overhead with intermittent drizzle and breezes of 15-20 mph coming in from The Irish Sea. The weather has improved through the afternoon and the morning players have had the worst of it. The front nine holes are playing very tough but there is a chance to repair some of the damage on the final four holes that are playing downwind. The cut will come at 70 players and ties. The tenth hole is playing the hardest of all. The morning scores averaged 74.

Ross Fisher's Wife Expecting First Child

The stand out early round comes from American Steve Marino who eagles 17 to aid a round of 68 and go into the weekend at -5. This should set a good target for the rest of the players today. Ross Fisher has a consistent round until the final four holes which he emerges from at -2 for the round and -3 overall. He will be in the Top Ten going into the weekend and will hope that his wife who is expecting his first child can hold on for a few more days.

Martin Kaymer Back to Back Winner

It is clear that a good round from yesterday counts for nothing as Paul Casey, John Senden, Ben Curtis and Mike Weir are discovering. Martin Kaymer, back to back winner of the recent French and Scottish Opens battles through for an even par 70 and is -1 for the championship. Justin Rose and Ernie Els both go into the weekend at +1, not out of it. Cabrera finishes on -1 and Goosen -3 after a 70. Jim Furyk is close to the top to and recovers well to finish on -1. Harrington and McIlroy should both squeeze through the cut after 74’s, both on +3.

John Daly nearly makes eagle on seventeen and then pitches directly onto the flag on eighteen and taps home for birdie, even par for the championship. The Japanes player Kuboya starts well, sags in the middle but recovers to enter the weekend on -3. Tom Watson starts poorly but with the crowd behind him recovers well, birdying the 16th to get to -4. Former champion Mark Calcavecchia posts a 69 and is in the clubhouse on -4. Stuart Cink and Camilo Villegas are both two over for the round and -2 for the title.

Woods drops a shot on the ninth and then tees off deep into the rough. Hundreds of the galleries search for his ball, to no avail and a double bogey means two shots dropped, back to +4 and he is in danger of missing the cut. It gets worse for Tiger after the 13th where he drops two shots and back to +7 and will miss his first cut in an Open championship.

Ishikawa Drops Seven Shots on Back Nine

Unfortunately it seems to have affected Ishikawa who drops seven shots on the back nine. Westwood stays firm and finishes at -2. Tom Watson hits a great iron down the final fairway and then holes a thirty foot putt birdie to post 70 and -5 tied for the lead. His 16 year old playing partner Matteo Manassero makes the cut at +1 after a 70. Garcia is in the hunt at -1 and Vijay Singh eagles seventeen and is -3.

Tiger Woods Misses the Cut

Westwood hits a fine approach to eighteen and all but birdies it but shoots par and is unlucky npt to br better than -2. Woods chips well but at +5 he will miss only his third cut in the majors and Ishikawa misses out bravely at +6.
